The capabilities of instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) for the investigation of mineral raw materials, technogenic materials, and environmental objects are reviewed. The principles of the method, as well as its advantages and limitations in the determination of trace elements in complex mineral and carbonaceous matrices, are discussed. A review of published studies on the application of INAA to the analysis of coal, coal combustion products, ores, and environmental samples is presented. INAA is shown to be a highly sensitive multi-element analytical technique suitable for the determination of rare, rare-earth, critical, toxic, and radioactive elements over a wide concentration range with minimal sample preparation. The prospects of applying INAA for analytical control of mineral resources and environmental monitoring are highlighted
