DuraBeryllium Plus X-ray Windows: Withstanding Aggressive Chemical Environments Modern X-ray spectroscopy equipment is often available in a portable version which have to be adaptable to harsh conditions of the environment, as opposed to a laboratory instrument which work in controlled clean environments. This paper describes the results of tests on the effects acids, alkalis, petroleum products, changes in temperature, pressure, and their combinations have on beryllium x-ray windows. The beryllium windows were tested uncoated, and coated with protective coatings DuraBeryllium and DuraBeryllium Plus.

On-line analysis of material chemical composition Control of element composition of substances and materials in real time on the moving conveyer belt represents huge interest from the point of view of obtaining information for on-line control of technological processes, sorting of products or primary components , quality control of raw materials and finished goods. Authors consider completely automated laser elemental analyzer . The system can be used for control of a chemical composition of mineral fertilizers, coal, ore, quartz sand, clay, cement, metals, alloys and many other materials. Thanks to economic efficiency of use of the analyzer full payback within several months in certain cases is possible. One of the examples of fast payback is a control of KCl composition in halurgy potash fertilizers. Decrease of KCl composition over a nominal rate in finished goods from 0,50% to 0,20% allows to pay back the system of control within six months.

Breaking the barrier of 20 kpsi: problems and decisions of designer of pumps for UHPLC This article advises designers of pumps used in liquid chromatography instruments to look beyond the seal for ways to meet industry pressure demands of 20 000 psi and above. It also looks at some of the reasons behind liquid chromatography pressure evolution and advocates a more holistic approach to pump design.

Instrument detection limit is a better metric for GC/MS performance Even though Signal-to-Noise Ratio (S/N or SNR) has been the industry standard for chromatography system performance for years, Agilent is leading the way for a new standard that provides a much more accurate and reliable performance metric for ultra-low noise GC/MS: Instrument Detection Limit (IDL). Although SNR still holds value for most GC/MS applications where matrix sources of baseline noise can be easily measured, IDL is a better, statistically based performance metric that eliminates the uncertainty associated with low noise SNR.
