Russian Symposium “Separation and concentration in analytical chemistry and radiochemistry”. Part 2 We continue the overview of the analytical equipment presented by Russian and foreign companies at the Symposium organized by Kuban State University in autumn 2014. In this part, we will manily discuss the modern instruments for elemental analysis, gas chromatography and chromato-mass spectrometry. The newest methodological approaches, such as moving bed chromatography and capillary electrophoresis with mass-spectrometry detection, had been also discussed at the Symposium; the equipment for realizing of these methods in laboratory conditions was presented

Water is the key chemical reagent in contemporary analytical laboratory Dr. Marvin McMaster, the scientist with more than 25 years of experience, wrote in his book that 90% of all issues which he faced while carrying out high performance liquid chromatography were caused by the columns. Most of the challenges with the columns in its turn were caused by contaminated water. Thus, contaminants contained in water can undermine all advantages offered by manufactures of contemporary sensitive analytical instruments. The provided priceless information will help you to avoid the most common issues linked with contaminated water. After reading this materia, you will understand that in the analytical laboratory water should be treated as one of the key chemical reagent.

Russian diamonds for ftir spectroscopy Scientific & production company SIMEX Ltd (Novosibirsk, Russia) has developed and manufactured an ATR attachment (attenuated total reflection with a diamond prism) for the FTIR spectrometer FT-801. In this device Russian synthetic diamond single crystals are employed for the first time. The crystals are produced at the V.S. Sobolev Institute of Geology and Mineralogy SB RAS, Novosibirsk, using the BARS high-pressure techniques. The results on the elimination of nitrogen impurities in diamond by using getters to reduce defect-induced infrared absorption are discussed. Photographs of the as-grown synthetic diamonds and the produced ATR elements are presented.

Ultra-low frequency raman spectroscopy with confotec confocal microscope SOL instruments Ltd. has implemented a new option for scanning confocal microscopes which allows measurements of low frequency Raman spectra (below 50 cm-1). The measurement of Raman lines very close to the laser wavelength is provided by OptiGrate’s BragGrate Notch Filters.

Quality control of medicines using Renishaw inVia Raman spectrometer It’s planned that every second medicine, sold in Russia by year 2020, will be manufactured locally – such an ambitious target have been set by the Ministry of Industry and Trade to the pharmaceutical market. But the import replacement program is still not achieved the objectives: now the market share of import is 80%. In order to set up manufacturing according to the GMP requirements, the appropriate conditions will require. The most important stage of the production cycle is quality control. Raman spectroscopy meets all QC requirements – no sample preparation, contactless, non-destructive method of analysis. Raman effect is very sensitive to very small differences in molecular composition and crystalline structure.

The automatic system for measuring of the concentrations of metals in the technological solutions based on the portable XRF analyzer "X-SPEC" The important part of any production process
is the quality control of the production. In metallurgy, one of the stages of the production – the refining of raw materials. The article describes the automatic system for measuring of the concentrations of metals in solutions. The system is designed for the control of the deposition of nonferrous metals at Nadezhdinskiy Metallurgical Factory of the Polar Division of MMC "Norilsk Nickel". The article shows the composition and the main characteristics of the analytical complex based on the portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer "X-SPEC M". The advantages of the complex
is compared to the pre-existing.

HPLC and ultra-HPLC: а state and prospects In analytical chemistry the part of chromatographic methods makes more than 45 %. Among them in the lead position is occupied with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In the review on the basis of publications of last five years the basic directions of development of HPLC method in the field of the theory, productions technology of new sorbents, devices and applications are generalized. The special attention is given a high-speed and highly effective chromatography - ultra-HPLC. Comparison of analytical possibilities ultra-HPLC and HPLC on core-shell sorbents with particle size 2.7 microns is made. It is shown, that in many cases for analytical practice there is no necessity for use of expensive ultra-HPLC instrumentation.

The secret of Stradivari: can it solve? More than three hundred years ago the legendary Antonio Stradivari of Cremona master has created unique tools of striking beauty with a unique sound. For three centuries there was a wide variety of myths and legends to explain the secret of the magic sound of Stradivarius violins. The most widespread legend of the secret recipe of varnish, whereby instruments sound so amazing. However, the main intrigue is that this recipe has long been lost. Not surprisingly, the violin makers and researchers have tried to solve the mystery of varnish, studying its composition. The authors have tried to solve the mystery with the help of modern analytical methods. The results of the first studies by GC-MS.

Comprehensive assessment of hair and nails elemental composition by XRF analysis and ICP-OES There is a wide range of diagnostic procedures used in modern medicine. Together with complicated high technology and expensive analytical methods more simple and clear methods of human body state estimation are popular. For study of elemental balance in human body procedures for determination of elements in different biomaterials are being developed. In article complex approach is proposed: the first is preliminary XRF analysis which enables to get information about elements content quickly and easily, and after it more accurate analysis of samples by ICP-OES is used. Optimal conditions of sample preparation are selected.

Мicrowave sample preparation for the solution geoecological tasks The monitoring of contamination in mining zones of ore deposits is considering as an especially important environmental task today. To predict the ecological risks of technogeneous processes, is necessary to investigate numerous samples with various composition (overburden and waste ores, natural waters, organisms after technogenic exposure). Modern instrumental methods ensure the multicomponent analysis of matter in a few minutes, but routine analysis often presupposes the introduction of samples into analyzer as a solution, and sample preparation becomes a limiting stage in this case. To overcome the gap between sample preparation and determination steps is possible using modern laboratory microwave systems. In the paper the examples of application of such approach to the analysis of ores, rocks, sediments, and natural waters, are given.
