The article highlights the key stages of formation, the current state, and the development paths of the State Service of Reference Materials for Composition and Properties of Substances and Materials. A retrospective analysis is carried out of the establishment of the service and the gradual formation in the country of an integrated system for the development, production, and application of reference materials. The key areas of the service’s activity are summarized: scientific research, methodological support, information provision in the field of reference materials, and international cooperation. It is concluded that the development of the State Service of Reference Materials is aimed at addressing priority state tasks: improving the quality and safety of domestic products, enhancing their competitiveness, and, as a consequence, improving the quality of life in the country.
